Meghalaya the whole state covers an area of approximately 22,400 kilometers which is surrounded by Assam at its north east side & by Bangladesh at its south west side.
It is the state which was earlier part of Assam, but near about 32 years ago it became the fresh state naming of Meghalaya.

How to Go

By Air

35 kilometers back to Shillong there is a small airport naming Umroi. From this airport buses & taxi services are available.
Another option is Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati which is near about 128 km from Shillong. Anyone can hire a shared taxi or Tata sumo or any car from the outside of the airport which is directly connected to Shillong. The rate is also minimal, Rs-300 per passenger.

Rail

Meghalaya has no railway connection till now but the railway station Guwahati which is 104 km away from Shillong & nicely associated with Guwahati.

Helicopter Service
Another option is Helicopter which is available from Guwahati to Shillong & Shillong to Guwahati. The ride takes only 20 minutes to reach Shillong.

Road
National Highway 40 is the road-way option which associates Shillong & Guwahati.

Best time to Visit

You can visit the place throughout the winter season From October to March.

In the central portion of the state Meghalaya covered with natural beautiful Khasi hills. These hills are well known for the most beautiful hill stations like Shillong Cherrapunji & Mawsynram. Mawphlang

Mawphlang is located at east khasi hill which is famous for its holy Forest, about 25 kilometers from Shillong. The holy forest include beautiful plants, trees with colorful flowers, colorful butterflies.

Cherrapunji (Sohra)

Sohra which was earlier named as Cherrapunji is located at east Khasi hills district of Meghalaya. Climate changes over here everytime. Sohra is almost covered up with waterfalls.

Mawsynram

Mawsynram is located at east khasi hills district.it is a small village which is 56 kilometers away from Shillong It is a place where so much rainfall occurs during the all year & it is recorded that it is the most wettest place all over the world.

Umiam Lake

Umiam lake regionally known as Barapani is situated at Rj nbhoi District which is near about 15 km away from Shillong beside the Guwahati Shillong National Highway.

Durga Temple at Nartiang

It is believed that the Durga temple which is located at jaintia hills district was constructed by the Jaintia King at the time of his change to Hinduism. This place is visited by many travelers. Here you can find a tunnel which is directly go to the river Myntag.

Tura Peak

Tura is located at west garo hills District. Helicopter service is available to visit this place from direct to guwahati & also from Shillong. The peak height is almost 870 meters above of mean sea level from where you can find the whole Tura town. Natural beauty of this place calls human being every time.

Cuisine

Red Rice is the mostly eaten at Meghalaya which is grown at here.
Pork is the main based dishes all over the Meghalaya by garo, khasi & Jaintias. They eat it in various types of delicious cooking arrangements.
Nakham Bitchi is a dish, which is prepared by dry fishes, chillies with soda. This soup is very tasty & also spicy which is regularly served with Rice.
Another type is known as jadoh which is mixed rice properly cooked with pork meat.


Culture

1.    The Khasis: - These peoples belong from Mon-Khmer Ancestry.
2.    The Garos: - They are from Tibeto-Burman Origin.
3.    The Jaintias: - Belongs from South East Asia.
Maximum of these three Communities have influenced by Hinduism. But also you can find churches, mosque & many Montessori’s over here. Many of the members of these communities have changed their religion to Christianity.



Festivals & Timings

Tribal Festivals
The people of the Khasi, the Jaintia and the Garo celebrate mainly three types of festivals.
1. Khasi festival – celebrated in the month of April at weiking Ground near Shillong.

2. Jaintia festival – celebrated in the month of July at Jowai. It is also known as 
Behdeinkhlam festival.

3. Garo festival – celebrated in the month of November at Garo hills. It is also known as Wangala festival.

Banaras is situated in Uttar-Pradesh. If you want to go Banaras through train you will get many options. There r so many express trains available. One of the best ever rising cities in India is Guwahati both commercially & religiously.
The city area is about 45 kms. Bordered by Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at west to Narengi in the Far East & southern border is bank of the river Brahmaputra up to the foothills of the Shillong at the northerner.
Guwahati is a well-planned city. It looks like a scenic beauty.

How to go at Guwahati

From any state there are many naming express trains go direct to Guwahati station/Kamakhya station. The fare of trains is minimal. Air transport is also available direct to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.

Pan Bazaar
In the mind of Guwahati is known as the Pan Bazaar area. It is not only the commercial hub of the city but as well many buildings standing which of them are Guwahati's basic landmarks.

Shakti-peeths of the city

The guwahati city’s environment can be devided into 4 no’s of shakti-peeths.

1.  Kamakhya Temple- on Nilachal Hill where the goddess sati’s yoni fell.
2.  Dirgheswari Temple- in the north of the city where Sati’s thigh fell.
3.  Ugratara Temple- At the place where sati’s navel landed.
4.  Bhubaneshwari Temple- At the top of the Nilarhal hill. Here the head of the goddess fell.


Kamakhya Temple

Located at Nilachal hill, which is 8 kms west away from Ghy railway station beside the river Brahmaputra. This is one of the most respected shakti-peeths in India. The goddess Kamakhya dedicates this temple. Goddess Kamakhya is a personification of Goddess Sati.

History
History says that in Shiva Purana the yoni of Sati chop when Vishnu, cut sati’s dead body into 51 pieces by his sudarshan chakra to save the world from Shiva's dance of devastation then the garbha-griha profound contained by the temple which  marks the holy spot. The holy spot is kept back sheltered with a red silken cloth.

Ugratara Temple

Ugartara temple is a famous centre which is located at the northern bank of Jor l'ukhuri. The history of this temple as after Vishnu destroyed by his sudarshan chakra Satis body part - navel cut down & fell on the spot where the temple now located.

Nabagraha Temple

The temple of nine planets is located over Chitra Chal Hill which is in Guwahati only 3 km away from Guwahati rail station. This place can be arriving by a taxi or an auto-rickshaw.









Umananda Temple

The Umananda temple is situated on the island which is naming Peacock Island. It is located at the center of the River Brahmaputra in Guwahati. It attracts so many people around the whole country throughout Shiva Ratri.

How to Reach
Anyone can visit this temple from Kachari Ghat which is located at crossing the river by country boat plying. This ghat is located exactly at the north bank of the river Brahmaputra. It is exactly reverse of Guwahati. Everyday ferry services are offered for visit of this place.


Basistha-ashram

This ashram is situated at the southern-most border of Guwahati city on the Sandhyachal hill. This is a healthy recognized holy place cum picnic spot. It is 12 Kms. Away from the Guwahati rail station. City buses are available & one can Visit to the Ashram.

Madan Kamdev

Madan Kamdev is situated on NH-52 which is approximately 40 kms away from Guwahati city. This place is a mysterical place.

Culture

Rongali Bihu festival
Assamese are many tribes like Mising, Karbi, Boro Dimasa, Rabha, Tiwa, Garo, Jayantia etc. Every tribe has their own characteristic cultural skin tone & forms.

Every tribe of all Assamese joins the festival BIHU.  Three type of it, naming- Bhogali, Rongali & Kati Bihu, this festival is the reorganization of Assamese & their uniqueness.

Cuisine

Assamese Cuisine
Normal diet for Assamese is rice with various type of cooked fish and meat plates. Rice are prepared at here in many forms like - Cheera (flattened rice), muri(puffed rice), akhoi (parched paddy grain), pithguri (pound rice), sandoh guri (fried, pound rice), komal saul and bora saul.

Fish curry is is prepared as a sour dish which named as machor tenga.

Baked fish wrapped in leaves with thye help of white mustard paste. This dish is known as patot diya.

Various meat preparations like - mutton, duck, Fork & pigeon.

The most well-liked a preparation is khar. It is make by on fire the stem of the banana peels.

Dress

Assamese women wear the traditional wear of their region & it is known as mekhela chadar. It is a two piece item of clothing. One with a skirt which is called the mekhela & a upper garment naming the chadar. This is made of Pat silk.
